The Saudi Arabia capital city of Riyadh is the most populous city in the country, numbering more than 6 million, and is located almost 800 kilometres north east of Mecca. The city, originally called Hajr, was founded by the Banu Hanifa tribe. Today Riyadh is a thriving, bustling city which boasts its own King Abdulaziz racecourse in the north east of the city at Janadriyah, within easy access of the King Khalid International Airport. The floodlit left handed oval dirt course of 10 furlongs, which opened in 2003, has a grandstand with a capacity of 5000 and operates each Friday and Saturday from September until April, with the highlight of the racing year being the King Abdul Aziz Cup contested in February. Racing is administered by the Riyadh Equestrian Racing Club which was formed in 1965 when racing took place on a smaller racecourse in a residential area of the city.
